This is SUNG SANG-YEOP, Chairman of the Organization for Venture Enterprise Certification

In today’s challenging economic landscape, venture enterprises driven by innovation are responding by adapting, evolving, and acting as a stabilizing force for Korea’s economic growth.

For venture enterprises to overcome uncertainty and take bold steps toward innovation that will enable them to become a cornerstone of the Korean economy, they need the right support and environment.

In February 2021, the Venture Enterprise Certification program was restructured into a system managed by private-sector experts, focusing on innovativeness and growth potential. This private-led approach to Venture Enterprise Certificati on is identifying and accrediting an increasing number of innovative companies with significant growth potential as venture enterprises.

The Organization for Venture Enterprise Certification is dedicated to fostering a robust venture ecosystem where transparency and expertise drive the certification of innovative, promising companies, ensuring their continued growth.

Certification

What is a "venture enterprise" in Korea?
The term "venture enterprise" generally refers to small and medium-sized enterprises(SEMs) that develop innovative technologies and concepts for commercialization. In Korea, companies meeting specific criteria outlined in the "Special Act on the Promotion of Venture Businesses" are recognized as venture enterprises.
Purpose of the Venture Enterprise Certification
  • The Venture Business Certification is a government-led initiative designed to discover and support technology-driven companies with high growth potential that meet the requirements specified in the "Special Act on the Promotion of Venture Businesses."

  • The Venture Enterprise Certification aims to reform Korea's economy from once centered around large corporations into an ecosystem that supports SMEs in transiting into venture enterprises and promotes venture startups. Launched in 1998, the initiative seeks to enhance the competitiveness of Korea's industrial sector.
  • The system was restructured on February 12, 2021, to place greater emphasis on innovation and growth, following legislative amendments made in the intervening years.

Our Team

Secretariat of the Organization for Venture Enterprise Cerification
Handless all processes, from application to certification.
Assessment Institutions
conduct the first evaluators of applicant companies through on-site inspections,
assessing technological innovation and business growth potential. Specialized evaluation from 12 assessment institutions visit and assess applicant companies.
Venture Enterprise Certification committee
Deliberates and makes final decisions on Venture Enterprise Certification applications,
as well as the revocation of issued certifications. Composed of members from various sectors, including business, government, academia, research, and certification.

    There are a total of 908 venture enterprises with annual revenue exceeding KRW 100 billion

    Among the 22 unicorn companies with a valuation of over USD 1 billion, 19 are venture enterprises.(as of 2022)

    Of the 1,661 KOSDAQ-listed companies, 1,222 are venture enterprises.

  • Up to 50% reduction in income tax and corporate tax for venture enterprises less than 3 years old

  • Expanded venture enterprise guarantee limits; preferential treatment for KOSDAQ listing reviews
Startups
  • Education and public employees can take a leave absence or hold concurrent positions as representatives or executives of venture enterprises.
Location
  • Up to 50% reduction in acquisition tax and 35% in property tax for venture enterprises located in a Venture Development and Promotion Zone
